June: Lots of rain, but even more winners

2012-06-30

It was the wettest June on record, and it played havoc with racing. Abandoned meetings; regular going changes; an unprecedented number of non-runners: June had it all. It was mid-summer misery. Not that you would know it from the performance of Isiris, who we recently welcomed back into the Besttipping fold. They posted a 30-day profit of 55.5 points thanks to the likes of Oratory, a winning 6/1 advice at Carlisle on 4 June and the Godolphin-trained, Dettori-ridden Colour Vision, the 6/1 winner of the Ascot Gold Cup.

Just a fraction less than 53% of all Isiris’ bets yielded a return, which was exactly the same figure as Personal Info, who also defied the elements to notch yet another profitable month – their 47th in the last 55. Personal Info’s figures for the period under review include an astonishing spell between 12 and 22 June when seven bets yielded six winners and a second. This sequence included the impressive 11/1 York winner, Sholaan, 13/2 Hamilton hero, Rock Canyon, and the 7/2 Brighton victor, Bennelong.

It wasn’t just Personal Info and Isiris who flourished in the rain. Bookies Enemy posted a 32.4 profit, a tally boosted by the final day victory of ultra-tough Ile De Re in the Northumberland Plate. The 7/2 advice was, incidentally, the first horse since Attivo in 1974 to win the Pitman’s Derby and the Chester Cup in the same season.

Bookies Enemy also enjoyed great success from their jumping tips with winners at 5/2, 2/1, 7/4 and 6/4 (twice). This month’s strong showing helped push Bookies Enemy into third place in the 2012 table. They now trail second-placed PJA National Hunt by less than 12 points.

CD Systems stand at the head of the table, their position strengthened by another strong performance in June. A 21 point gain propelled them to a 97 point profit for 2012.

With a strike-rate of 25% and bets averaging 7/1, it’s little wonder CD Systems are thriving. This, their tenth profitable month in the last twelve months, was highlighted by two successful advices on horses whose prices shrunk dramatically in the build-up to their races. However, as highlighted on this page previously, CD Systems email their tips the night before the race. So the 9/1 available on Caranbola (Beverley, 2 June) and the 8/1 offer on Mataaleb (7 June, Wolverhampton) were known to subscribers the evening before the relevant races.

June was also a memorable month for Speculate with a number of bumper payouts including Airmen’s Friend, an 18/1 winner at Market Rasen on 8 June, and two 16/1 Wolverhampton winners, Mr Chocolate Drop (7 June) and Kyle Of Bute (18 June). Other winners came in at 12/1, 9/1 and 15/2. The overall result was a pleasing 18.4 point profit.

Newmarket’s ever popular July meeting heralds the start of another busy month with plenty of action both on the Flat, and over jumps. Let’s hope for less rain and more sun. But whatever the weather, Besttipping will be your best guide to the month’s tipping action.
